题目：The Jesuits and Chinese Science
摘要：
Based on the historical context of the Jesuit mission to China between 1560 and 1820, this paper examines the role of knowledge diffusion in scientific production. To facilitate their China mission, the Jesuits introduced European sciences to Chinese cultural elites—the Confucian literati. This stimulated the literati toward scientific research. In places where the Jesuits diffused European sciences, the number of Chinese scientific works increased significantly. The finding questions the conventional wisdom that the Confucian literati of imperial China disparaged science, and demonstrates the importance of access to new knowledge in scientific progress.
主讲人介绍：
马驰骋老师现为香港大学经济与工商管理学院助理教授，他2011年获得香港科技大学社会科学博士学位。马驰骋老师目前主要的研究领域为经济史和发展经济学，在学术成果方面，他曾在Journal of Development Economics、Journal of Economic History等国际顶级期刊发表学术论文。他还担任亚洲历史经济学双年会与量化历史研究国际年会组委会成员。
