讲座内容摘要：
Global value chains have transformed international trade from trade in goods to trade in tasks, changed trade patterns between developing and developed countries, extended bilateral trade balances into multilateral, weakened the nexus between exchange rates and trade balances, and de-linked technology innovations and employment creation. Current trade statistics are inconsistent with GVCs based trade and greatly inflation China’s exports and surplus with the US.
In this seminar, the speaker will use the iconic American product—iPhone, to illustrate the fundamental changes of international trade due to the proliferation of GVCs, analyze how the iPhone added US$1.9 billion trade deficit to the US, explain why China exports iPhones to the US where the iPhone was invented, and demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the Yuan’s appreciation on the iPhone trade. Based on the case of iPhone, the speaker will introduce a new concept “trade in value added” and argue that value added should be used to measure bilateral trade balances and the actual contribution of exports to an economy. The generalize the conclusions, the speaker will extend the analysis into processing trade, accounted for 100% of China’s trade surplus and a task performed by Chinese firms in GVCs.
