Abstract
This paper investigates the response of labor productivity growth across regions in China to the size of the technology gap with the relevant international frontier. Using firm-level data for 1995-2004, the paper finds that as coastal industry closes the technology gap with the international frontier relative to China’s interior regions, coastal labor productivity growth has begun to subside. An implication of this gap-productivity growth response function is that it appears that China’s relatively backward regions are beginning to exploit the advantages of backwardness. If the closing of the international technology gap is causing a relative slowdown in productivity growth along the coast, this gap-growth response function may serve as the foundation for China’s beginning to move down the far side of the Kuznets’ curve toward a more uniform distribution of living standards.
