主讲人简介:
Pierre Mouganie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Simon Fraser University (SFU) where he works as an applied microeconomist. He received his PhD in economics from Texas A&M University. In his research, he uses quasi-experimental methods to provide insight into policy issues related to the education and labor market. He explores the extent to which school and college quality impact students' future outcomes. Recently, He has also taken an interest in understanding how peers and role models impact students' choices, particularly as they relate to the STEM gender gap. He also serves as an editorial board member at the Economics of Education Review. He is a Re-search Affiliate at IZA - Institute for the Study of Labor and a contributor at the Annenberg Ed Working Paper Series. He has published articles in Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Human Resources, AEJ Policy and other top journals.
摘要:
Despite the prevalence of school tracking, evidence on whether it improves student success is mixed. This paper studies how tracking within high school impacts high-achieving students’ short- and longer-term academic outcomes. Our setting is a large and selective Chinese high school, where first-year students are separated into high-achieving and regular classrooms based on their performance on a standardized exam. Classrooms differ in terms of peer ability, teacher quality, class size, as well as level and pace of instruction. Using newly collected administrative data and a regression discontinuity design, we show that high-achieving classrooms improve math test scores by 23percent of a standard deviation, with effects persisting throughout the three years of high school. Impacts on performance in Chinese and English language subjects are more muted. Importantly, we find that high-achieving classrooms raise enrollment in elite universities by 17 percentage points.as they substantially increase scores on the national college entrance exam-the sole determinant of university admission in China. Effects are concentrated among lower-income students.

主讲人简介:
Jared Rubin is Professor of Economics at Chapman University. His research focuses on historical relationships between political and religious institutions and their role in economic development. His book How the World Became Rich: The Historical Origins of Economic Growth (with Mark Koyama, Polity Press, 2022) explores the many theories of why modern economic growth happened when and where it did. His book, Rulers, Religion, and Riches: Why the West Got Rich and the Middle East Did Not (Cambridge University Press, 2017) studies the role that Islam and Christianity played in the long-run “reversal of fortunes” between the economies of the Middle East and Western Europe. It received best book awards from the Economic History Association and the Society of Institutional and Organizational Economics. Rubin is the Co-Director of Chapman University’s Institute for the Study of Religion, Economics and Society (IRES), President of the Association for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Culture (ASREC), and serves on numerous editorial boards. He graduated with a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University and a B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Recent accounts of Britain’s industrialization have emphasized the importance of Enlightenment ideals that viewed scientific and industrial pursuits as central to human progress. Significant qualitative evidence has been put forth in support of such claims. This paper tests these claims using quantitative data from 173,031 works printed in England between 1500 and 1900. We generate an algorithm to determine the proportion of each volume that is most closely associated with science, religion, and political economy. We determine the “progressive” sentiment of each volume and derive a weighting over time for each category. We proceed to assign each volume an “industrial score” which accounts for the frequency of words associated with industrialization. The analysis yields three primary findings. First, there is little overlap in science and religion in the period under study. This indicates that the “secularization” of science was entrenched prior to the Enlightenment. Second, while scientific volumes did become more progress-centric during the Enlightenment, this was more prevalent in volumes found at the nexus of science and political economy. Third, works related to industry are more progress-centric beginning in the 17th century, and this is especially the case for books at the science-political economy nexus. This suggests that it was the more pragmatic works related to industry—those that spoke to both a scientific as well as a broader political and economic audience—that contained the cultural values cited as important for Britain’s economic rise.

Liang Dai is an Associate Professor of Economics at Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He obtained his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 2015. His research focuses on applied microeconomic theory, and his work has been published in Journal of Economic Theory.
摘要:
We study a principal’s joint design of optimal monitoring and compensation schemes to incentivize an agent by incorporating information design into a dynamic contracting framework. The principal can flexibly allocate her limited monitoring capacity between seeking evidence that confirms or contradicts the agent’s effort, as the basis for reward or punishment. When the agent’s continuation value is low, the principal seeks only confirmatory evidence. When it exceeds a threshold, the principal seeks mainly contradictory evidence. Importantly, the agent’s effort is perpetuated if and only if he is sufficiently productive.

罗文杰女士现任南方基金指数投资部总经理,拥有南加州大学数学金融硕士学位和加州大学计算机科学硕士学位。她在指数投资和量化研究方面拥有16年的经验,曾任职于摩根士丹利投资银行(纽约)。目前主要致力于量化因子的研究、策略开发、产品开发和交易流程的优化等工作。罗女士是南方基金多个旗舰指数基金产品的基金经理,合计在管规模近600亿,其管理的中证500ETF是国内最大的股票ETF之一,上市以来连续8年荣获金牛奖,位居国内指数基金之首,是唯一上市以来每年均获得金牛奖的指数基金。

健康风险价值评估关注个体如何在健康和其他目标间做权衡,近几十年长足发展,产生了以统计生命价值为代表的一系列重要理论和成果。现有价值评估方法中,基于调研的选择实验在环境健康领域尤为适用,因为它更灵活地揭示个体在各种具体的风险与规制情景中的偏好,为政策成本效益分析提供重要支撑。本次报告将结合主讲人前期的相关研究,就个体防护和公共政策偏好的关系、随研究条件变化而变的偏好、人群异质性等议题进行探讨。
